We Remember
MUSGROVE, Alexander “Alec”
August 19, 1933 — April 30, 2023
Born on August 19, 1933, in Winnipeg, MB, Alexander Musgrove died on April 30, 2023, in Kelowna, BC. Son of Alexander and Vera Musgrove.
Alec is survived by his only son Craig Musgrove, daughter-in-law Shawna, and his grandchildren, Tana, Travis, and Joey, all of West Kelowna, BC; he is also survived by his son-in-law Peter of Penticton, BC, and grandchildren, Peter Jr of Edmonton, AB and Alicia of West Kelowna. Sadly, he was predeceased by his wife Martha (née Walliser), who died in 1997 at the age of 58, as well as by his daughter Annette Martel, who died in 2019.
Dad was born in Winnipeg and lived along the Assiniboine River between the Forks and the Legislative Building. A small park is there now. His father (Alexander Musgrove) was from Scotland and arrived in Canada in 1913 at the age of 32, and was responsible for the founding of the Winnipeg art gallery and sketch club and its functions. A founding father and dean. His mother was Vera, who was born in Ontario in 1898.
Dad in his early years worked for the Bank of Montreal and was transferred to Southeast Saskatchewan, where he met his wife (my mother) Martha. I could listen to all day to the stories of how they met in a little farming community. They were married in 1961, in Beinfait, Saskatchewan, and they had two children: Annette born 1962 in Winnipeg, and Craig born 1971 in Winnipeg.
Dad was very much a family man. For years and years, the same routine Monday thru Friday, he was up to catch a city bus to go to work and bus back again. Mom “Its suppertime, where is Dad? Well, I guess he fell asleep on the bus again and will be a little late!…”. He loved family and get-togethers; there were many times when Dad would sit quietly and just watch. Christmas was always very special for him, when Mom was around and I was a child. He would quietly watch and commit these events to memory.
Dad attended night school/university to learn to speak German, as Mom was from German descent, and this worked well for a trip to Europe years later. Dad had much fun speaking to someone in another language (including that German dog we met at the room for rent, in the Mosel)! Dad, that was so funny!
Dad retired and moved to Penticton in 1993.
When Mom passed in 1997, Dad found new people and new events to take part of. Having his children close was a good thing. In the last few years of his life, many things changed. We moved him closer to Craig in West Kelowna and enjoyed many more short notice dinners and get-togethers.
Dad, clearly, was a very lovable person. The people who were with him the last 2 years of his life, providing close(er) support, always mention how funny, friendly, and thoughtful Dad was. They would mention a little thing he did and watch as they smile. He was easy to love. Easy to be around. Always a story of two, something silly, something witty, whatever! That’s my Dad.
Dad, I will miss you very much.
Family and friends will honour him, each in their own way. No formal service will be held
