We Remember

MALLETT, Robin “Rob”

March 3, 1944 — July 26, 2023

After a very long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease, Rob passed away peacefully in the early hours of July 26, 2023. His loving wife, Bev, was at his bedside at Mountainview Village in Kelowna, where Rob had been cared for with love and compassion since January 2021.

Rob was born in Alliance, Alberta and raised in Red Deer, AB. He attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Geography. He was a very popular and respected teacher for many years in Edmonton and St. Albert, until he and Bev retired in June 2000. They moved to Kelowna, BC in August 2003 and enjoyed many happy years here.

Rob is survived by his daughter, Cara; son-in-law, Monty; grandson, Aidan; and granddaughter, Paige. Rob will be remembered with fondness by his many family members. Many happy times were spent with his cousins from Alberta, several who had also retired to the Okanagan. His sense of humour was also appreciated by cousins from England and Scotland, who he and Bev visited and hosted several times in the Okanagan. Needless to say, more than a few winery tours were enjoyed! Rob also enjoyed many laughs and good times with Bev’s family members – sisters and brothers-in-law, cousins, and their spouses, nieces, nephews, and their families. His friends in Edmonton, St. Albert, and in Kelowna will not forget Rob’s repertoire of “unique” expressions and his ability to command an audience when telling his stories.

Rob was predeceased by his parents, Marjorie and Stan Mallett; his sister, Carol; and his nephew Michael.

Rob’s family is very appreciative of all staff at Mountainview Village Complex Care who came to know Rob over the time he resided there. They can all attest to his fanatical support of the Edmonton Oilers. He believed he could convert any person, from any place on earth, to an Oiler fan! We also appreciate his family doctor at Mountainview who cared for Rob with great wisdom and compassion.

In accordance with Rob’s wishes, there will not be a funeral service. An informal tribute is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Parkinson’s Society of BC, in his name.

  • David Gunderson says:

    My condolences to the family,
Back in 1969 Robin and I were finishing our BofEd at the UofA. We planned to apply to teach in the Bahamas and wrote away to get proper application forms. I believed I received a package, but he didn’t. Not wanting to apply on my own, I accepted a teaching position in Calgary. His arrived later, but he, I believe, accepted a position in Edmonton. How our lives would have been different. My wife and son moved to Kelowna in 1978. We both retired in 2003, the year that Rob and Bev moved here. I never knew this until I saw the obituary. How great it would have been to have connected after all this time.

Regards and condolences to Rob’s family.

Dear Bev and Cara and family
I am so sorry that you lost Rob, a friend full of warmth, kindness, intelligence and diligence. When I was lucky enough to see you, Bev, and Rob there was always much spirited conversation about the world and it’s inhabitants. He was always interested and interesting and most aware of the hilarity of it all. Bev, I send you deep condolences, as his leaving the building leaves a huge hole.

I was so very sorry to hear of Mr. Mallett’s passing. I had him for a teacher in high school (Paul Kane) and enjoyed his classes. He had a great sense of humour and found ways to engage his students. My condolences to his family and friends.
