Some people ask me, they say, “Well, if I’ve had a death, do I have to deal with a funeral home?” Well, yes.

You need to employ the services of a funeral home for the simple reason that, um, we are agents for Vital Statistics and you, you need to dispose of your loved one in one of two ways: either by cremation or by burial. That involves jumping though some, some legal hoops.

It’s important to realize that uh, an individual who takes responsibility for the care and the handling of human remains – someone who’s died – they need to be licensed. And, um, that’s an important thing really, is the public health concern.

There are different ethnic and cultural groups which like to have a lot more personal hands on with the care for the body, and of course we do that with them under the licensed and the careful conditions that make that a safe experience for those people.

We are experts in this field. People don’t do this every day. On average, most people in British Columbia, have a death every eight to ten years.

What we do for people – as professionals who deal with this all the time – is, I think, really invaluable. And we like to invite participation at every level of, uh, of care for a loved one and, uh, bring our expertise alongside to assist with that.
