ADKINS, Robert

Passed away October 4, 2012 in Tahiti.  He and his daughter Jacqui were on a cruise to visit his brother and sister-in-law, Terry and Bette Adkins in Melbourne, Australia.  Bob was fortunate enough to be enjoying himself right up to the end playing pool, mini golf, table tennis and shuffle board.  He is survived by his loving wife Jean and had just celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on September 21st.  Bob was a very gregarious man, who loved life and enjoyed meeting people.  He was born by the sea in Shoeburyness, Essex, England in 1931 and although he was in the R.A.F. for 19 years, the sea was a life-long passion.  In 1970, he sailed in a 40 foot boat from Vancouver to Honolulu with five other adventurers.  Bob was an avid rugby player and helped get rugby started in Edmonton in 1956.   After the R.A.F., he worked for Shell Canada, retiring in 1984 at 53 years of age.  His three daughters Laurie (Rob) Benn, Jacqui (Carson) Adkins/Cassidy and Jill (Peter) McDougall and their respective children Melanie, Michael and James Benn, Matthew Hedges, Breanne (Jason) Thompson, Stephanie and Christopher McDougall and one great granddaughter Kaydence Thompson, will all miss him very much.  Bob was returned to Springfield Funeral Home in Kelowna and cremation took place on October 17th.  A celebration of life with his family will be held in August 2013.  Donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated.

    Dear Jean & family,

    So sorry to hear of Bob’s passing but it sounds like he enjoyed his life right to the end. I enjoyed working with Bob during his Shell years. He was full of surprises like reading shorthand upside down – no secrets kept from Bob. He is very lucky to have such a lovely family & I am sure you all have a lot of lovely memories. Take Care Everyone & my sincere condolences. RIP Bob,

    Bob was certainly the man you painted in the obituary and more. I can still hear his infectious laugh. He touched many Jean and was loved by us all. Take care of yourself.

    I worked with Bob at Shell Canada for 20+ years. He was a very competent,diligent employee and I enjoyed working with him.I also enjoyed talking to him about his sailing and travels.I was able to meet him a few times after his move to B.C. when he returned to Calgary for retirement functions.My condolences to Jean and the family. Bob was a good person.

    Jean and Family, our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. I just heard from Ed Hopkins tonight of Bob’s passing. Although we have not spoken in a long while, our thoughts of past cruises with you folks on Myeerah always came to mind as we made our way to the coast for our annual sailing adventures. As a founding member of our sailing group in Calgary, Bob will always be remembered fondly by us old ducks that still get out on the water. Remember the good times and the blessings you had with this super guy.
