We Remember
WIESHLOW, Michael
December 5, 1957 — October 1, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Wieshlow on October 1, 2024, at Mountainview Complex Care in Kelowna, BC. Mike was born in Nanaimo, BC, on December 5, 1957, into an RCMP family, which meant he moved around a lot during his childhood.
Mike had a deep love for nature. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, road trips, and travelling whenever he could. He worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company in Fort Rae, in the Northwest Territories, and spent time as a special constable with the RCMP in Alberta. Later, he moved to Ontario to be closer to his eldest brother and sister-in-law, and to learn about alarm systems.
Eventually, Mike made his way back to Kelowna to help his father with his business. He worked as a process server and made many friends at the Kelowna Law Courts and City Hall. Mike was like a walking encyclopedia—very intelligent and strong-willed. He saw life in black and white (with no grey areas), and it was often his way or no way.
Family meant everything to Mike. He loved backyard BBQs, fishing trips, and camping at Dee Lake, and Beaver Lake; those were his happy places. As his health declined, he spent a lot of time in the backyard with his mom and family, enjoying the deck and pool. He loved listening to music, cooking, and playing games like Yahtzee, Scrabble, and Bingo. He could often be found with a good book in hand.
Mike travelled to Mexico many times and visited his brother and sister-in-law in Florida. Mike often travelled to Ontario to visit his brother Pat and sister-in-law Deb (thank you for helping him so much!). He also enjoyed his drives to Omak, Washington. With a great sense of humour and quick wit, his jokes were off-the-cuff and always funny, just like his dad and two brothers. You could often hear him say, “Ahh, the sound of summer,” as he cracked open a cold beer.
In mid-2023, Mike moved to Mountainview Village due to health decline.
Mike had many girlfriends over the years, but had two great loves. He adored children and always dreamed of having a big family of five.
Mike was predeceased by his parents Alex (d. 1994) & Mary (d. 2020); little sister Judith (d. 1961); and brothers Ron (d. 2013) and Pat (d. 2024).
He is survived by little sister Kathleen and brother-in-law Arne; sister-in-law Deb; sister-in-law Rhonda; niece Angela (Darcy) & family; nephew Justin (Jessica) & family; niece Ashley (John) & family; nephew Curtis; close friends Jim Baily, Dennis & Gladys, Trish Anderson “little sista”, Connie (Gregg) Terleskey “little sista”, Gregg Pettit, Kathy & Geoff, and Pat Fay; and many cousins in Calgary and Brandon.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Mountainview Complex Care. You really accepted Mike as he was, and tried to make his life brighter. You are all truly God’s angels on earth. Special thanks to Annica, Ray, Joan, Roelle, Kartika, Teresa, and Chaplain Darryl. Also, thank you to his friends at the smoking area – “Cowboy”, Lori, Sid, Deb, and Justine.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kidney Foundation.
Mike’s ashes will be scattered in the Rose Garden at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery, 1991 Bernard Ave, Kelowna, BC. A Celebration of Life will be held in the family backyard in 2025.
Thank you to Springfield Funeral Home for helping with Mike’s final arrangements.
