We Remember

MCCANN, Nita Gillian

March 8, 1939 — February 9, 2025

With her loving family by her side, Nita McCann passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, at the age of 85.

Born in Surrey, England, on March 8, 1939, to William and Nancy Plumbridge, Nita grew up alongside her younger brother, John in Hersham.

As a young woman, she met and fell in love with Tony. They married in a beautiful winter wedding in England before embarking on a life filled with adventure.

Their journey together truly began with the birth of their first son, Mark. Soon after, an exciting job opportunity led them to Canada, where they settled in Quebec and welcomed their second son, Tim. Though they briefly returned to Knaphill, England, they ultimately decided to make Canada their home, putting down roots on the North Shore, where they built a house and added Sandra to their family.

Nita devoted herself to raising her children and embracing new experiences. For a few years, the family temporarily relocated to Czechoslovakia, where they lived, worked, and traveled before returning home to the North Shore.

In the 1980s, Nita embraced a new chapter, moving to Vancouver Island to carve out a life of her own. She spent many happy years creating beautiful homes across the island, eventually finding her most cherished place in James Bay.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Mark & Claire, and their children Bailey (Tom) and Heather (Bradley); Tim & Barb, and their children Richard, Brandi, and Leslie and Kelsea; and Sandra & Haydn, and their son Mitch (Danielle).

Nita enjoyed music, often filling her home with familiar tunes, but her true passion was gardening. She had an incredible talent for bringing spaces to life, creating lush, vibrant gardens wherever she lived. Her artistic spirit also shone through in her painting, needlepoint, and award-winning baking, which earned her blue ribbons and the admiration of many.

Above all, Nita was a devoted mother. Her greatest legacy is the love, creativity, and warmth she instilled in her children, who will forever cherish the memories of a life beautifully lived. She will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society in her name.
