HERBERT, Douglas Bruce
—
Passed away on Monday, November 7, 2016 at the age of 96 years. Doug will lovingly be remembered by four children: Lynn (Barry), Diane (Wim deceased), Joan (John), Doug Jr.; grandchildren: David (deceased), Kim, Leisa (Ken), Stephen, Cindy (Brian), Justin and Chrystelle; step-grandchildren: Anissa (Rob), Johnathan; 19 great grandchildren and most wonderful friend and cherished caregiver, Pat. Predeceased by his loving wife, Norah, his mother Gladys, father Gordon, brothers Garnet and Ralph and dear sister, Mona. Doug was born in Vancouver but lived most of his 96 years in Kelowna. He served as Corporal in the Canadian Army during World War II. Doug served the City of Kelowna for 32 years in various capacities. In 1970 he was promoted to the position of City Administrator. Doug was an ardent snow skier since the age of 17 and he also loved boating and water skiing. “Herbert’s Hollow,” a ski run at Big White Ski Resort was named in Doug’s honor in appreciation for his many years of volunteer services in various capacities. Doug was an ardent and very particular photographer who loved to aggravate his children and grandchildren by making them pose in “just the right way.” The family is very grateful for the loving care and support over the last three years offered by the staff at Three Links Manor. A very special heartfelt thanks to caregivers, Barb and Daniel; nurses Agnieszka and Valentina. Doug’s kind and gentle manner will be missed by all who knew him. Honoring his wishes, there will be a private service.

Doug was such a wonderful man. He was so kind and full of life! His presence exuded warmth and joy and whenever he was around there was always laughter. I have many fond memories of him at the lake with his camera in hand, taking photos and telling stories in only a way he could. My family and I all loved him so much. Uncle Doug will be missed greatly. Love, Sara Emslie
Sad to hear of Doug’s passing, my condolences to the family. My memories of Doug are from Big White, our family built the first cabin across the road from 10 skiers and I recall seeing him so many times up on the roof with the snow blower. I know and appreciate how much he did for Big White in early work with the Regional District. I always enjoy skiing “Herbert’s Hollow” and he does go through my mind when I do so.

We remember with fondness your father and grandfather Doug Herbert. We will remember him for his smile and gentle spirit. May you be comforted at this time as you reflect on his life and legacy.
Hello dear family of Mr. Herbert.
I just wanted to send my condolences to you on the death of Mr. Herbert. I remember him from my youth, as he helped my father (Gunter and Theresa Jaschinsky) navigate a conflict with the City of Kelowna.
I remember Mr Herbert visiting with my mom and dad numerous times, and passing along valuable help, support and information.
Sorry for your loss,
Mrs Amy Cooke nee Jaschinsky
We are all thinking of you at this time, and send our sincere condolences. We all have such great memories of your Mom and Dad and all you kids. As a child it was always the highlight of my summer to go visit everyone in Kelowna, and going to the lake and waterskiing with your dad driving the boat, I will never forget how kind and welcoming your folks were every summer, it is a very happy memory for me. Love from Uncle Bill, Gordie, Debbie, Lorrie and Kathy. Our dear Mom, and your Auntie Rose passed away this year on March 24, but I know that she really enjoyed her time spent with you all as well.
Dear Lynne, Diane, Joan and Doug, Sorry that we don’t have your addresses to send proper condolences but Mick and I are so glad that we were able to spend so much special time with your Dad even after he left Sandhaven. He seemed so with it up until the end of the summer and although recently we knew the end was near, it is still a loss but we are sure that he was ready and at peace when he decided to say goodbye. Our memories of him, and all of you, will be happy ones. Thinking of you all, Our Fondest wishes and heartfelt thanks for sharing him with us.
Jacky and Mick McGarry (Sandhaven)
We were saddened to learn of Doug’s passing from this world and send our condolences to his family. Doug loved skiing and for many years had a place at Ten Skiers, right opposite our cabin so we often crossed paths We saw him often happily clearing the snow from their large parking lot.
More recently, we met and will always be appreciative of advice he gave us after we sold the cabin. A real gentleman!
