We Remember
SMITH, Alastair (Al)
January 6, 1923 — June 30, 2017
Alastair (Al) Smith was born January 6, 1923 in Scotland, the second of nine children born to Allan and Elma Smith. He moved to Canada in 1924 and completed grade 8 before working on a fishing boat on the West coast. As the war started, Al served with the Canadian military. Al met and fell in love with Clara Friesen in Prince Rupert, and they were wed on August 10, 1946 in Vancouver. While living in Chilliwack their children Judy and Allan were born. Later they moved to California living in Pasadena and Arcadia. Al was a great businessman owning and operating several furniture stores between 1946 and 1970 in Vancouver, Chilliwack, Vernon and Rosemead, CA. His first retirement –from the Red Barn Furniture store- allowed Al and Clara to travel extensively for two years throughout the US with his parents before settling into La Quinta, CA. It was there that Clara succumbed to cancer in 1991.
Following several years of travelling between California and Kelowna, Al met and then married Evelyn Shauer in 1995. After splitting their time between the US and Canada, they built a home in Westbank. Al is predeceased by his daughter Judy (Wilkinson) and his son Allan.
Al is survived and fondly remembered by many; his wife Evelyn, siblings, step-children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as close friends from church, Men’s Breakfast and the Coffee Club. A Memorial Service will be held at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 1:00 pm.
