We Remember
AFFLECK, Elizabeth
—
Elizabeth Affleck passed into the presence of her Lord peacefully in Abbotsford, BC on January 8, 2013 at the age of 102. She joins her beloved husband Dr. R. Wesley Affleck, who predeceased her in 1996; her siblings (two sisters and two brothers); her son-in-law Peter Dyck and many other family and friends. Elizabeth is survived by three sons: David (Anne) from New Westminster, BC, formerly serving in France for many years, Bob (Cherry) of Kelowna, BC, Don (Charlotte) formerly of Kelowna, now living in Chilliwack, BC. She is also survived by three daughters and a special woman who still calls her Mom. They are Esther Dyck, of Harvey, North Dakota, Carolle (Bryan) Whittall of Maple Ridge, BC, Dorothy (John) Clunies-Ross of Haines Junction, Yukon Territory and Karin Wollis of St. Albert, Alberta. In her younger years, many children in need were looked after by Elizabeth and added to her growing family without hesitation.
Elizabeth was born in the small Mennonite farming settlement of Nikoleifeld, Caucasus, Russia in 1910. She came to Canada in 1925 with her family having survived the First World War and the Russian Revolution. Married in 1933, she and Wesley lived through the Depression of those days as well. She supported her husband throughout his teaching and leadership roles at three theological schools, Winnipeg Bible College (now Providence College), the former Burrard Inlet Bible Institute and Okanagan Bible College. She also got her Driver’s Licence at 65 years old, to travel and work at various care facilities for the elderly. Her recent days have been spent crocheting, knitting and quilting for family and friends. When that became impossible due to failing sight, hearing and mobility, she continued to pray daily for each of her numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren by name and by memory. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The family would like to thank the Menno Hospital staff in Abbotsford and a special volunteer, John, for their kindness, love and care for Mom.
The family invites friends to join them in a visitation and viewing at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Wednesday, January 16th, followed by interment at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery. A Memorial Service/Celebration of Life will take place at a later date, time to be announced.

To the Affleck family –
May God comfort your hearts as you mourn the passing of your dear mother. There is no doubt she will hear the commendation of the Lord, “Well done, good and faithful servant”. Her life was a shining example of loving service to the glory of God.

I will never forget dear Mrs. Affleck who taught me so many things about life from fall 1964 to spring 1967;
those years we all lived at the huge
log lodge overlooking Burrard Inlet.
Our sympathies to all the family who
shared her with “the extended Bible school family”
Hi Sandi. Yes, we remember the Burrard Inlet days. We do so much appreciate your kind thoughts. There will be a “Celebration of Life” service on March 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Guisachan Fellowship Baptist Church, 2210 Stillingfleet, Kelowna, BC
To the Affleck family, on behave of my Mother Patricia Coe and myself, our condolences. I was one of the first students at B.I.B.I. and have many memories of your mother and father.
Gail Coe MacKay
Hi Gail. The B.I.B.I. days go back a ways don’t they. Mom and Dad were still in their prime. We do thank you for your kind thoughts at this time. There will be a “Celebration of Life” service on March 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Guisachan Fellowship Baptist Church, 2210 Stillingfleet, Kelowna, BC
Mrs Affleck was always kind and gentle and one of my fondest marital stories is how her husband regularly made breakfast for her. I could see that she was a wonderful support to him! My husband Arnie attended OBI 1979-82 and Dr Affleck has remained his most influencial teacher. He had time and patience to answer Arn’s many questions and because of his Greek instruction my husband has a love of biblical languages and now teaches them at Millar College of the Bible. With joy for them and prayers for your comfort…Sharon
Hi Sharon and Arnie. It is interesting to consider the far reaching beneficial implications of mom and dad’s lives. We agree with you that OBI was a fine school and dad loved teaching with all of his heart. Bless you in your own ministry. Also, thank you for your most kind words. There will be a “Celebration of Life” service on March 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Guisachan Fellowship Baptist Church, 2210 Stillingfleet, Kelowna, BC for mom.
My name is Brian Mee, I attended OBI, OBC, and was fortunate to have Dr. Affleck as a prof. I will never forget the time I invited him to speak at the first church I pastored. I still remember his sermon (some 27 years ago) my friend the Bible. I remember bringing them out from Kelowna to Summerland, and Mrs. Affleck insisting I stay for tea and lunch and enjoying a wonderful time of fellowship. I was blessed by their ministry to me, and fortunate to know them both. I also remember singing in the school choir at one of their anniversaries, and Dr. Affleck sharing his appreciation for Mrs. Affleck. They truly loved each other, they always struck me as folks who lived out their faith. I count my self blessed not only to learn from Dr. Affleck in class but to learn from their example as a couple as they lived out their faith. Blessings to your family as you celebrate her life and grieve her loss.
Brian
Thanks so much Brian for these memories. The family appreciates them very much. The Memorial Service is March 23 as mentioned above. Although we are all still grieving her loss, it will be a time of celebration and remembrance for a life well-lived. Cherry and Bob for the family.
