We Remember

DOWLING, Michael Joseph

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Joseph Dowling.

He was born December 17, 1942 in Vancouver, BC, to John & Rose Dowling.  He was the first born of five siblings: Susan, Brian, Maureen & Kathy.  At a young age, Mike met and fell in love with Iris, who would then become his wife of 60 years.  They were married on September 8, 1962 and soon began to grow their family.  They welcomed three wonderful children: Michael (Chris), Bob, and Brenda (Warren).

Mike chose to follow his father’s footsteps and he joined the Vancouver City Police Department, where he devoted 31 years of service.  In that time, he and his family moved to Ladner, BC, where they lived for 34 years creating lifelong friendships through baseball, golf and the Ladner Legion.  Mike & Iris were blessed to have five granddaughters: Nicole, Michelle (Kevin), Jennifer (Nick), Brittany (Travis), and Shelby (Jamie).  They were blessed again with seven great-grandchildren: Linden, Kaine, Harper, Stephanie, Marlie, Charlie & Beckett.  Mike is also survived by his dear Aunt Teresa.

Mike & Iris moved to Westbank, BC in 2005 where Mike would spend the rest of his life waking up to the sights of Okanagan Lake.

We would like to thank the staff at Hospice House Kelowna, Kelowna General Hospital, Kelowna Renal Centre, and Nurse next door.

To Iris and family, I’m deeply saddened to hear of Mike’s passing but so very grateful to have known him. I have a deep appreciation and respect for Mike because when I was considering a career in policing, Mike agreed to talk to me about his career in the VPD so we met at the Legion and he shared his experiences with me. I’m incredibly thankful he took the time to do that because he had a huge impact on me as I decided to pursue that career and I don’t know if I would have without his encouragement. Mike was so kind to everyone and he touched the lives of many people. I’m so very sorry for the loss of Mike, he was special and will be greatly missed, sending my deepest condolences to the family.
