HIENDL, Anton “Tony”

October 19, 1931 — December 21, 2024

At the age of 93 years, Tony passed away peacefully at the Kelowna General Hospital, Palliative Care Unit. He had been living independently, after his wife Angela had passed in 2018, in his own home until he was admitted on December 4th, 2024. During his final weeks in the special care of the 3M Unit’s staff, Tony had been visited numerous times by his close family members and many of his friends. All were able to enjoy his company, share stories, have a few good laughs, and reminisce about the good times.

Tony is predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Angela (d. February 24, 2018) and his son Anthony “Tony” Hiendl (d. August 20, 2022).

Tony is survived by his daughter Susan Hiendl (Bryan); daughter-in-law Kelly Hiendl; granddaughters Jillian (Sean) and Lindsay Hiendl; and brother-in-law Fritz (Hilda, deceased) Scholze (and nieces and nephews) of Germany.

Born October 19, 1931 in Munich, Germany, Tony lived a long and fulfilled life. As a young man, he worked as a finishing Carpenter and enjoyed skiing the Austrian Alps and playing soccer. Tony immigrated to Canada in the mid 1950s, and was soon to be followed in 1956 by his future wife Angela Scholze of Munich, Germany. They married on January 18th, 1957, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They had 2 children, Susan and Anthony “Tony” HIENDL.

Tony worked many years in industrial construction, at numerous different sites between Ontario and Quebec. In the 1960s, they settled and moved into a large rental home along the shores of Lake Ontario on Lakeshore Blvd., where as a family they were able to go boating, swim, fish, and waterski. As Tony continued to work, he had bought a 2 acre lot on Walker’s Line in a rural area of Burlington, Ontario, where he began the construction of their own custom home. For many years after the children left, they spent winters in Florida with their VW Camper vans, sailing the shores of southern Florida. They sold the house and moved into a Condo in Stoney Creek, Ontario. They had purchased their first sailboat, then a second one, to sail the waters of Lake Ontario. In 1992, they drove west to purchase an empty lot in the Carrs Landing area, Winfield, BC. to build their 2nd custom home, bought another sailboat and lived there for 13yrs. Post Tony’s necessary hip surgery, they sold and moved into a Condo to heal and slow down. This lasted a couple of years, then in the Spring of 2007, they purchased a home in the Gallaghers Golf Course community to enjoy the rest of their lives surrounded by fresh air and mountain beauty.

After Angela’s passing, Tony continued to socialize within Kelowna and the Gallaghers community and made many more friends. They’d gather regularly for dinners, BBQ s and celebrated many special occasions. They also formed a Sports Car Club where they would cruise on day trips to tour many of Kelowna’s hot spots, and wineries for lunch.

Tony thoroughly enjoyed when his close family members and grandchildren would come out to visit.

All who knew Tony well knew he had a zest for life and lived it on his own terms. He enjoyed his food, wine, and the occasional G&T. In his latter years, he very much enjoyed watching FIFA Soccer games and always read the morning paper.

Tony will be missed and will be remembered for many things, especially his wit, humour, and that unforgettable smile.

There will be no funeral service. There will be a Celebration of Life gathering in Tony’s honour to be held in Kelowna at a later date and time.
