We Remember
KAKUNO, Shirley
—
Shirley was born May 4, 1948, in Victoria, BC, later growing up in Creston and Greenwood, before settling to raise her family of five kids in Midway, BC. With a penchant for beautiful handicrafts, she opened a gift store, Kettle River Expressions, first in Midway and later relocating to Greenwood, and in 2000, she moved to Kamloops to expand her gift store, renamed Brambleberry Cottage, to include coffee, ice cream, and light lunches, which she ran for ten years before making the decision to move to Kelowna to be closer to her kids.
Shirley was known to her acquaintances as a shy and soft-natured woman with an enviable talent for any textile art or craft she put her mind to, and her Old English Smocking became recognizable throughout the Boundary Valley and across the province. To those fortunate enough to know her well, she was a fun-loving and determined powerhouse of a woman, with little room for shortcuts, who was always up for great music to cut a rug to, or a gathering with friends over coffee, or giggling to all hours of the night, reminiscing about the good times while sipping on her Pepsi.
Shirley leaves behind her five children, Donna Rabbit (Paul), Darren Kakuno (Heather), Justin Kakuno (Alicia), Miriah Kakuno (Eric), and Lindsey Kakuno (Sai); ten grandchildren, Jasmine (Tim) and Skyler (Roberto), Kara and Colin, Jamon and Lennox, Emery and Gabriella, Ari and Stevie; two great-grandchildren, Avery and Mackinnon; a sister, Grace Rees, and brother Bill Hansen. She is predeceased by her parents, William and Dorothy Hansen; and her younger brother, Larry Hansen.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Obedkoff for his deeply compassionate care and most especially, the Village at Mill Creek, who have always gone above and beyond in the near ten years Mom was so fortunate to have their care.
