We Remember
MAXIMUK, Maxine Sharon
September 28, 1952 — November 15, 2024
Beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, partner, and friend, Maxine Maximuk passed away peacefully in Kelowna, BC on November 15, 2024, at the age of 72, surrounded by her family. Born on September 28, 1952, in Vancouver, BC, Maxine was the third of six children in a close-knit family and was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage.
Maxine is survived by her daughters, Sunny (Sean) and Tina (Bryan); her beloved grandchildren, Haley, Avery, Forrest, Makena, and Linden; and her partner of over 20 years, Denney Thompson. She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings Karen (Dave), Valerie, Ramona, and Greg (Lisa); as well as her nieces and nephew, Ryan, Alexa, Chloe, and Daisy; along with numerous friends and extended family members who will miss her dearly. Maxine was predeceased by her parents, Metro and Sylvia, her sister, Carol, and her Uncle, Ed.
A talented and passionate artist, Maxine loved painting, especially pictures of Winnie the Pooh for her grandchildren. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures such as walking, watching sunsets, spending time with her family and meditating. She was known for her sense of humour, caring heart, thoughtful and generous spirit, and her ability to host memorable dinners that brought loved ones together.
Maxine’s faith was an important part of her life. An active member of the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), she drew deep solace, purpose, and strength from her spiritual journey. Above all, Maxine adored her grandchildren. She cherished every moment with them, spoiling them with treats like ice cream, Starbucks, and candy. Affectionately nicknamed “Lego Grandma,” she spent countless hours building and playing Lego with her grandsons. One of her most treasured memories was attending her daughter’s wedding in Maui in 2013.
Maxine spent 28 years working for B.C. Tel in various departments, then she went on to pursue a career in healthcare as a care aide in the community. She was known for her compassion and selflessness, always putting others’ needs ahead of her own.
Maxine’s family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Kluftinger, Dr. Verdurmen, Dr. Bains, Dr. Amigo, Dr. Ali, and countless nurses and healthcare workers at KGH on 3 West, Emergency, 5B, 3MU and the cancer clinic. The care and kindness that Maxine received was beyond appreciated.
No formal service will be held at Maxine’s request; however, a small family gathering will be held in Sooke in the summer to scatter her ashes. Maxine will be deeply missed by everyone whose life she touched.
We love you forever, Mom. We’ll see you on the other side one day.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kelowna General Hospital (KGH Foundation).
