We Remember

MCPHAIL, Peter Allen

October 5, 1941 — January 27, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter McPhail on January 27, 2024, at age 82.

Peter is survived by his son Michael (Jennifer Del Rio); daughter Erin; and three grandchildren, Mitchell McPhail (Katarina Cudmore), Jennifer (Ostap) Lepak, and Alyssa Del Rio. He will also be missed by two brothers-in-law, Jim Haggerty and John (Brenda) Haggerty, and their families. Cousin Peter (Carmen) Hogger and family, as well as many friends and neighbours who surrounded him, will also remember Peter.

Peter was born on October 5, 1941, to Alice McPhail in Pense, Saskatchewan. When he was young, he worked many jobs in Pense. He delivered groceries for Pense General Store, helped at Statler Esso station on Highway 1, and worked as a farm hand for Lloyd Campbell. To begin a career, he joined the RCMP in 1963. He completed his training in Regina, SK, and his first posting was in Ottawa, ON.

In 1965, Peter married his childhood sweetheart, Donna Haggerty, and they continued their life together as Peter was posted throughout Ontario and British Columbia, including North Bay, ON; Timmins, ON; Ottawa, ON; ending in Vancouver, BC. They were in Vancouver for the last 15 years of a 33-year career with the RCMP, and while there Peter attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was in charge of the Property Management System that was responsible for all RCMP-owned properties throughout the province of BC. He often spoke of his dedicated staff in Vancouver, for making his job a pleasant and rewarding experience.

Upon retirement, in 1995, he and Donna moved to West Kelowna and began a second career as snowbirds in Yuma, Arizona for 21 years.  Then, his loving wife of 54 years passed away on July 2, 2020. Now Peter and Donna are united again.

Condolences

  • Adeline Peake says:

My sincere condolences to the whole family. Pete Tymko who has also passed and I enjoyed your parents friendship for 20 + years. The two Pete’s shared many walks and projects together, including adding on to our trailer. They were called “Dumb and Dumber Construction”. Had many great times together and so many laughs. Many memories with your parents, which I am sure they are carrying on in Heaven now. Love to you all at this sad time.

  • E Kren Weckman says:

  • Lyle and Marian NURSE says:

So sad to hear the news of Peter’s passing. We knew and worked with Peter for many years. Pete was a very caring and comforting man, and he and Donna loved nothing more than meeting and entertaining friends, new and old. We all really enjoyed our times in Arizona, with the occasional trip to Mexico where he had a few refreshments. Bon Voyage and RIP good friend. Condolences to the family.

  • Melanie Nathe says:

Our hearts go out to you! Your Mom and Dad were a super couple and brought joy to so many people during their time as Good Sam campers and Snowbirds in Yuma! They will both be missed! I remember your Dad being a very kind person. A really nice guy! You were lucky to have him.
