James Franklin “Jim” Stewart, Rancher, passed away quietly in his sleep April 26, 2011, at the age of 84.
Born April 7, 1927, in El Paso, Texas, Jim is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Helen; daughter Deborah Jan of Penticton, BC, son James Robert “Jim” (Patricia) of Kelowna, BC, and daughter Mary Kathryn “Kate” (Brent) Horner of Pollockville, AB; 7 grandchildren, Callie Dawn (Janet) Mitchell, Carmen Ann McAnulty, Wyatt (Leah) Stewart, Kirt Stewart, Nathan (Cassie) Horner, Brett Horner, Lindsay Homer; 2 great-grandchildren, Blaize and Cruz. Also surviving: brothers Richard Davant (Nettie) Stewart of London, England, William Robert Stewart, and Henry Vermillion Stewart, both of San Francisco, CA.; nephews Scott and Meiji in California; Ray and niece Leslie in London.
Looking back on his early years, Jim said, “All I ever wanted was to be a cowboy. I had to buy a ranch to do it!”. Following his dream, Jim and his young family bought the Casorso Ranch in 1960 and moved to Kelowna from Aztec, New Mexico. For years thereafter, they operated as Kelowna Ranches, also buying and running the Bulman and Chilco Ranches, then further evolving into land development under Ellison Estates.
