We Remember
SWETLISHOFF, Helen
November 9, 1935 — October 27, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Helen Swetlishoff, who left us peacefully on October 27, 2024, at the age of 88. Helen was born in Nelson, BC, on November 9, 1935, to William and Mary Woykin. She grew up in a close-knit family with her two brothers and three sisters, maintaining strong, meaningful relationships with her siblings throughout her life.
Helen’s large brown eyes always had a sparkle, which first caught the attention of young Steve. Her beauty and grace won him over, and with their marriage in 1954, they began a seven-decade love story that would span a lifetime. Together, Steve and Helen built homes filled with love, raising five children and creating a legacy of joy and connection. They hosted countless family celebrations with 30+ dinner guests – gatherings that became legendary. Their lives were filled with laughter, winter sports, fishing, boating, and relaxing days at the beach, creating memories that will be cherished by all who shared in them. Helen and Steve celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on April 17, 2024.
Helen dedicated her life to nurturing relationships and creating a sense of togetherness. She believed every gathering was an opportunity to celebrate – whether a birthday, holiday, or simply a sunny Sunday afternoon. For Helen, no occasion was too small for love, laughter, and, of course, delicious food. Lovingly known as “Bubby” by her nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, she was a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Bubby always had a special way of showing her love – every visit included delicious homemade cookies to enjoy and extras tucked into our bags to take home.
Her culinary talents were phenomenal. Helen cultivated her own vegetable gardens, proudly harvesting fresh produce that she transformed into nourishing meals. From canning peaches and tomatoes to crafting exquisite Russian dishes like borscht, perogies, cabbage rolls, and delicious fruit tarts, her kitchen was a haven of warmth and flavour, always filled with lovingly prepared dishes ready to be shared.
Beyond her family, Helen built lasting friendships during her years of employment at Sun-Rype, where she worked for over 20 years. She cherished these relationships, sharing memories and camaraderie that enriched her life.
Helen had a unique gift for making everyone feel welcome and cherished. Friends became family as she opened her heart and home, always ready to lend a listening ear and offer wise advice. She celebrated each of our achievements, recognizing the unique qualities that made us shine. Every outing with her became a cherished memory; a lunch date became a treasure, and a shopping trip an adventure.
Helen was predeceased by her husband, Steve, and her daughter, Shirley. She is survived by her loving family: her son Richard (Gail), daughter Gloria (Roy), daughter Angela (Shawn), son Daryl (Catherine), and son-in-law Kevin (Rita); grandchildren Naomi (Chris), Alyssa, Lucas, Brianne (Ted), Steven (Haley), Alex & Isabella, and Cole & Ella; great-grandchildren Ethan, Cohen & Ava, Beau & Neve, Quinn & Jake, and Baker & Navy; her sister Mary (Alec) Kanigan; and many beloved nieces and nephews who were close to her heart.
Rest in peace, dear Helen. Your legacy of love, connection, and joy will forever light our way.
