We Remember

WADDELL, Norma Joan

1933-2023

Our beloved mother, Norma Joan Waddell, passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Thursday, April 13, 2023. A beautiful, cultured, and dynamic woman, she is truly an example of a life well lived.

Norma was born at St Mary’s, in New Westminster, BC. Her family enjoyed music, singing, dancing, and get-togethers. She spent her childhood playing in Marpole and on the beaches of White Rock. Bright with her studies, Norma accelerated in high school and went on to earn her RN diploma at Royal Inland Hospital, in Kamloops, where she met the love of her life, Ivan. Together they had many wonderful adventures.

They spent the first eleven years of their marriage in Port Moody raising three children, exploring, and camping in the wilderness. Norma worked casually as an RN until the family moved to Nelson, BC.

Norma began to expand her career and develop her social and leisure activities. She took courses and taught at the local college, played Bridge, learned to curl, to downhill ski, and to golf. A favourite memory was when Norma won a role in the amateur theatre production of Hello Dolly.

Relocating to Montreal in 1974, Norma completed her teaching certificate at McGill University, taught nursing assistants at Westmount High, studied art history, became a docent at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and a member of the St Lawrence Choir. Upon retirement, she pursued golf at Vaudreuil Golf Club, enjoyed travelling to Europe, as well as various destinations in Canada and the United States, and wintering for many years in Florida.

In 2000, Norma and Ivan settled in West Kelowna enjoying amazing friends, golf, Bridge, CFUW, and church at St George’s. Subsequently, she moved to Kelowna and took pleasure attending concerts and theatre presentations, walking along the Mission Creek Greenway, and enjoying her communities of River Run and the Cathedral of St. Michael and All Angels. Visits to Vancouver to attend the opera gave her much pleasure, as did her trips to Maui.

Norma will live on in the lives of her family: Julia, Kristy (Jean), Andrew (Vicki), her brothers Gerry and Paul (Judy), and her grandchildren Ian, Emilie, Eric, Justin, and Katelyn. She will be missed by close family, Philip and Ken.

The family would like to acknowledge Norma’s caregiver, Colleen, and Dr. Ryan Bystrom, who supported Norma above and beyond throughout her twenty-three years in the Okanagan.

Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Norma’s life on TUESDAY, APRIL 25, 2023, at 1:00 PM, at the CATHEDRAL OF ST MICHAEL AND ALL ANGELS, 608 Sutherland Ave, Kelowna, BC. A reception will follow at the River Run Clubhouse, 609 Truswell Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be offered to the Central Okanagan Hospice Association. Thank you

    Dear Julia and family ,
What a beautiful tribute to your mom of a very full, enriiched , fun filked , active and amazing life ! Your mom was truly a special gem and a wonderful neighbor in River Run . She always had a smile on her face and even in the last few years when her health was failing some , she always had a positive attitude . Julia she could not have been luckier to have you as a daughter who devoted the last 3 years of your life to live with her , make meals, take her places in Kelowna as well as on holidays to Maui , a place she loved . and care for her so lovingly . We know how empty your life will be for awhile but I can hear your mom saying “ Now Julia .. you get out there and have fun … it’s your time to enjoy life !”
We are so sorry we won’t be in Kelowna to attend her service but you will be in my thoughts and prayers . Sending big hugs snd lots of love my friend ❤️❤️
    Sherry and Jack
